Flu Vaccinations & Bushloe End Surgery

What is Seasonal Flu?

Seasonal flu is a disease caused by a virus which usually occurs in winter; it is highly infectious and is not a form of heavy cold. Because it is caused by a virus and not bacteria, antibiotics will not help heal the Flu however the Vaccine will provide the necessary cover for most strains of the virus.

Symptoms of Flu

Symptoms of Flu hit suddenly and may include: fever, chills, head and muscle ache, cough, and sore throat. Flu is much worse that a seasonal cold and may mean that you have to stay in bed for several days. Flu can lead to much more serious illness such as Bronchitis and Pneumonia and often make other existing conditions worse.

Swine Flu

The Swine Flu strain may still be around this winter and may have adapted to last years vaccine. The Swine Flu Vaccination is included in the Flu Vaccine.

Vaccine at Bushloe End

The Flu Vaccine is being distributed on a set of three Saturdays in October at Bushloe End Surgery. This is because of the magnitude of patients needing the Vaccine and that the surgery has to order in the jabs. The Flu clinic is out of ordinary operating times to ensure that normal practice is not disturbed. Three people can book in one minute slots ensuring that should partners or other vulnerable people can be given the Jabs around the same time.

Dates of the Flu Vaccinations are:

  • Saturday 8th October 2011

  • Thursday 13th October 2011

  • Saturday 15th October 2011

  • Saturday 29th October 2011

Other appointments being made are for those who are house bound or at nursing homes. For those who require a home visit by a nurse, please request this with reception over the phone.

Should you have the Vaccine?

Even if you’re healthy you should consider getting the Vaccine if you suffer from any of these:

  • A heart problem

  • A chest complaint or breathing difficulties (including Bronchitis and/or emphysema)

  • A kidney or liver disease

  • Lowered immune system

  • Had a stroke or TIA

  • Diabetes

  • A neurological disorder such as MS or cerebral Palsy

  • A problem with your spleen

Others who should have the Vaccine include:

  • People over the age of 65

  • People who live in a nursing home or residential area

  • The main Carer or an elderly or disabled person

  • Pregnant women at any stage (Pregnant women after catching the strain have increased risk of contracting diseases afterwards)

People who have had the Flu Vaccine previously should be covered for the strains that have previously gone round. However, strains mutate which means that they may become immune to the effects of the Vaccine which means that it is necessary for people at risk to have this Vaccine even if they have had one previously.

People who should not have the Vaccine include people who have had adverse effects to the Vaccine previously, are allergic or are allergic to eggs. If you have a fever, the Vaccination may be delayed.

Should you need an appointment please call the surgery on: 0844 815 1425

Man with FluIt is nice to get a flu shot it's true
bif you can't here is what you can do

Tiny droplets of flu are out for you
Stay away from the droplets - stay away from the flu

If someone is sick stay three feet away
or a sneeze or cough may spray droplets your way

And don't touch your eyes or nose or mouth
cause droplets of virus come in by that route

Your food can bring droplets of virus to you
so first clean your hands and I'll give you a clue

Can't find a sink, don't know what to do
use hand sanitizer, always carry with you

Place a dime sized amount in the palm of the hand
and rub over both hands the best that you can

If these do not work there is medicine too
but you have to take it within two days of flu

I hope this poem helps you not get the flu
but if you do, try not to spread it too

Coughing at someone just is not fair
cough or sneeze into a tissue with care

And if there is no tissue that's okay too
sneeze away and down, your sleeve will do
